I've Known This Wonderful Woman Longer Than Anyone And I Love Her

A YOUNG Timothy Scott
A few years back I decided I should celebrate my day of arrival with my Mom.  It made very good sense to me. Mom should get something for my birthday.  Yes, she should receive SOMETHING for all her hard work. Recognition for "...a job well done" in giving LIFE to me.
Me & Mom, Mom & Me 5/2013
I was the one that doctor's said wouldn't make it and forty-seven years later I'm still here.  It proves some doctors don't always know what the hell they're talking about, but I digress.  Mom gave birth to me and I want to show my appreciation.

Me & Mom, Mom & Me 1967
It's not bragging, but Mom does enjoy my cooking.  She'll tell anyone that will listen how much she likes the food I prepare.  So I'm cooking her dinner (still not sure what that will be) and dessert.  I couldn't decide which I wanted more, so I'm baking a 7UP cake and a chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream frosting.  Yep, two cakes.  I'm doing it all for my mother to say, "Thanks Mom, I appreciate all that you've done and you're my favorite Mom because you're my only Mom."  It goes without saying how much I Love My Mom, but I will say, "I Love My Mom very much."  Thanks Mom!!!

Time To Do This

Iowa Cooley -- 5th Generation
Hey!!  I did take a pause for the cause.  I didn't realize how long it's been since I posted something here.  I may have been inactive for a moment, but this blog is alive and kicking.  Writing posts for Tim's Tales and Stories is the one thing I can say I enjoy doing without hesitation.  Sharing the family history and pictures is of paramount importance to me and there's more to come. The best way to know the history of this family is to tell the tales that have been told to me.  I'm on it.  We've got a big birthday celebration approaching for Mom.  That gathering of family ensures a fun time will be had by all.  There's more coming.  Just wait...you'll see.

I Laid Down My Burden

Raspberry Island on the Mississippi River
Sunday morning I decided to take a walk around my neighborhood.  One of the places I explored was Raspberry Island.  I've been there many times before, but it's usually to walk around, look at the river and move on.  I did things differently this time.  I actually spent time sitting by and enjoying the views of the river and city from the island.  I'm glad I did.  Being near water is always something I liked to do.  River, lakes or oceans; being near water is something I never grow tired of doing.
Live on stage

It was one of those unplanned events that was a good one.  I will be doing it again before the cold weather sets in.  A fun time was had by me.

JURY DUTY: Day One - WTH?

In the state of Minnesota you can receive a summons to serve on jury duty IF you are a licensed driver, have been issued a state identification card or you're a registered voter.  I qualify for two out of the three, so I received a summons in May.  That time wasn't good for me. I don't mind doing my civic duty and all that good stuff.  I postponed until July, which worked better for my schedule.

When I received the summons I noticed the directive in BOLD CAPS informing prospective jurors to leave communication devices (phones, pagers and pda's) at home.  I didn't like that part but those are the rules.  Uh huh - yeah right!  Though instructed to leave them home, some people brought their phones, used their phones AND they were loud when they did!  If asked to guess I'm sure some would say those people were from the hood, because it's believed hood folks never follow rules and are always loud.  WRONG ANSWER!  I watched as a few business men and woman whipped out their phones and began using them. You know the type that believe they're PRIVILEGED or entitled?  I tried to ignore it, but one joker - MR ANDERSEN insisted on letting me and the rest of the prospective jurors in the pool know all his business by speaking loudly into his phone. I wasn't there for all of that noise.  I cared less than a damn about his agenda or clients and I didn't want to hear it. I decided to ask the two Ramsey County employees in charge of this three ring circus about the usage of phones.  I approached their office, knocked, opened the door and stepped inside.

DO NOT BRING COMMUNICATION DEVICES: PHONES, PAGERS, PDA'S

The world was totally different behind that door.  It was cooler and quiet!  MR ANDERSEN, Susie, Megan, Holly, Becky, Crissy and Peter weren't in there running their mouths on their cell phones.  I asked the civil servants for some clarity on the no phones policy.  "We try to enforce the rule, but some don't comply.  We will take their phones before they enter the courtroom," said Miss Lady sitting behind the desk.  To which I replied, "So someone like me, that follows that rules, has to listen to the dumb-asses (Yes, those are my words) that didn't follow the rules?"  She shrugged her shoulders and repeated the answer.  I didn't like her answer the first time and the second time it kinda pissed me off.  I gave my standard, "Oh - okay" and out the door I went to reclaim my seat in the jury assembly room.  I made certain to give MR ANDERSEN one last extended mean look and sat down.  I picked up my book continued reading about my hometown's past with notable criminals.

My two books

I'm not sure how much time passed, but the next thing to happen was the calling of names for a case.  Several names were called, including MR ANDERSEN.  HA!  The big mouth had to shut it up and get off the phone.  Phones had to be turned in before being escorted to the courtroom.  He didn't appear to be too happy at that time. He turned off and turned in his phone before leaving to sit on a case.  Meanwhile, yours truly was excused for the rest of the day.  I found this to be a form of justice well served.  I'm going back tomorrow.  We shall see what it will be.

UPDATE
The next day I was asked by the by the jury room supervisor, "Did you bring your phone?"  Huh? Say what?!?!?  I'm the only one to follow rules and dude asks me if I BROUGHT MY PHONE???  Oh hell to the nah!  I looked him dead in his eye and said, "No, I didn't.  I paid attention to the rules and left my phone at home."  This is what he said, "I told you yesterday you could bring your phone.  It's fine for you to bring it.  If you're called for a case we'll take it from you at that time.  You mentioned your elderly parents yesterday (Oh, I did say if I had elderly parents and left my phone at home and couldn't contact them, it would seem all others should leave their phones at home.  I forgot I told him that.) and it would be okay for you to have your phone to stay in touch with them."  I stood there blinking.  I didn't think he listened to what I said the day before.  Yes, I thought wrong.  It was obvious I didn't listen to him.

I showed up at the courthouse for three days, checked in each day, was asked if I brought my phone (each time I said I did not), read my book and was home by 12:00pm.  I wasn't called for a case and that was fine with me.  I did as I had been instructed to do and all went well.  I think it was within a week of completing jury duty that I received a check in the mail for my services.  All in all the experience was a good one.

 ...and I got mileage!

Leaving On A Jet Plane...

Plans change, people change and that's all good as I sit on the veranda, sipping coffee and listening to Chaka Khan sing about living a super life. I have to admit this is a nice change of pace. It feels good to get away and spend time in my second home. The nice thing is "COOL LEE" and "UNRULEY COOLEY" have a chance to spent some quality time together. After a few laughs, we decided to dine out for breakfast. Time to start moving and get out and about. I'm going to say a fun time will be be had by all.

First, The Tide...

press play to view the clip

I shot this mini-clip when I was in Los Angeles in February. It's not very long, but it gives a brief glimpse into the serenity of watching the Pacific Ocean rushing in and then rolling again. I try to make it to Venice Beach each time I visit L.A. It may not be the most "glamorous" of the beaches in Southern California, but it's one I do enjoy visiting. One of the best things to do it sit on the sand and watch the sunset. It's something I believe should be experienced once in your life.

Timoteo's Tacos

It was about fifteen years ago the UNRULEY one and Wilma B introduced a new idea to me. A new way of eating one of my favorite things to eat; tacos. As we sat in the kitchen, we shared stories, laughter and awaited our meal of tacos made from Morningstar genuine, imitation meat.
That's not the name on the box, but that's what I labeled them. Wilma B (a.k.a Juanita) was working the stove, creating magic and had everything all laid out. Once the meat alternative was done, it was time to eat. I was surprised there was no lettuce. Cilantro was used in place of lettuce. First no meat and now no lettuce?!?!?!? I'm from MinneSNOWta and I was used to eating tacos prepared with REAL meat - beef, turkey or chicken was what my people (family and friends) used. Lettuce was used, not cilantro.
I believe you should try something new and different to keep your life fresh and have new experiences. This was a first for me and I was ready to give it a try. The tacos weren't bad at all. In fact, I enjoyed eating them so much I stuffed my face. I was impressed with the taste and happy I tried something new. I came home with the brilliant idea to make them for my carnivore grandmother, mother, sister and nephew. Not everyone is open to something new, especially if you're using a meat alternative. Grandma said, "It's not a meal if there's no meat." The odds were stacked against me, but I decided to give it a try. Needless to say the meatless tacos went over like a lead balloon. My family wasn't ready to make the change to tacos made from veggie burgers. One thing they did enjoy was the cilantro. That went over very well.
In fact, we still have tacos (made with meat) with cilantro today.

Ain't No Sense In Going Home...

So I was talking with Mr C a few months ago and he mentioned this song, "Jody Got Your Girl And Gone," by Johnnie Taylor. When we finished our phone call I thought about that song for a few minutes. My mind was transported to 685 Fuller Avenue, where we lived when the song was released in 1971. Our record player was located in several locations in our house. It could be found in the foyer, living room or dining room - depending on how Mom wanted the furniture arranged for that week. I'd put a stack of albums or forty-fives on the spindle and the fun would begin. Each one would drop and the house would fill with music. I remember playing, "Jody Got Your Girl And Gone." I had no idea what the hell the song was about, but I knew most of the words and would sing right along with Johnnie Taylor. I liked that song when I was a little five year old boy, and I still like it as a grown man. Thanks to Mr C for reminding me of a good song I had forgotten. I can't say I recall all of the lyrics, but I do remember this, "Ain't no sense in going home, Jody got your girl and gone!"

Eat, Laugh, Learn and Love...

I spent the July 4th with the family and it was very nice. We had (yes, I'm going to tell it) a lot of delicious food. The "barbeque queen" worked her magic once again. Toyia knows how to work a grill and does a damn good job. Much better than I could, for she has the patience I know I don't. I say, know your talents and utilize them. She braved the morning heat to barbeque ribs, chicken, pork chops, three types of bratwurst and a slab of bacon. Yes, the "barbeque queen" barbequed a slab of uncut bacon and it's good. She picked, cleaned and cooked twenty bunches of collard and mustard greens. I love me some greens! My contribution to the meal was macaroni and cheese, baked beans (try them with sweet Italian sausage, green and red peppers and diced onion), corn, cole slaw, dinner rolls and cornbread. I made a pineapple upside cake and caramel pecan brownies for dessert. After the meal we sat around and discussed family history. One story lead to another and soon we logged on Ancestry.com, Snookie and I discovered more information about the Lowry side of the family. We located census records about Maggie Lowry Smith, her husband Henry and their three children. I will add all of this to the family tree. I enjoyed Snookie and Mom telling me their recollections about the family's neighbors/friends in Lawrence, Kansas. They have long lasting memories of their summers spent in Kansas with their grandparents. Yeah, I know some people would rather, drink, smoke, shake a tail feather, cuss or fight with their family at a gathering. I say go for whatever makes you happy and ensures you have a good time. Me? I prefer talking, sharing good food, laughter, stories and learning my history when I gather with my clan. We had a Happy Fourth of July and a fun time was had by all.

I've Got Some 'xplainin To Do...

On any given episode of "I Love Lucy," Ricky told Lucy to explain how she ended up in the situation she was in at the moment. Many times what happened was funny or was made funny by Lucy's explanation. I don't know how funny I'll be, but I'll give a run down of "what had happened" to bring you up to date.

You see, I was born by the river in a little tent. And just like the river I've been running ev'ry since. Oh wait, that's a Sam Cooke song. I'll focus. A lot has happened since my last post in April. Much has prevented my posting new stories or family history. Nothing bad, in fact life has been good. I've been BUSY! Between work and life outside of work; various events and travel - there's been little time for me to settle in and write. Writing is something I enjoy. I've stated several times the reason for this blog is to indulge the inner writer in me. Time to let that kat come to the surface and shine again.

Who knew two years ago this blog would take on the life it has? Though the original intent was for family to view it, family, friends and family friends became regular readers. To each one I want to say, "Thank you." Others showing an interest in what I've written inspires me to write more. Summer is here (and the time is right), so look for more posts. I've got some important dates to acknowledge, which I didn't in the past months. I'll make certain to get to it. Look out, Tim's back and he's got some pictures to share and stories to tell. There's more to come in the days ahead.

Much appreciation and love,

Tim

I'm Trying...

It takes me a lot longer to type anything and for good reason; I'm recovering. Last week I had minor surgery on my right wrist. All is going well and I will be back to my healthy self soon. I wanted to write more with the posts I have, but it's not been easy typing with one hand. I think all of this is teaching me to be more patient.

WARNING - These People Don't Know How To Shut The Hell Up On A Plane When You're Trying To Get Some Sleep Because You Had So Much Fun On Your Vacation And You Didn't Sleep Too Damn Much.

Why did this man (let's call him Don), his wife (let's call her Millie) sitting across the aisle and their companion (let's call her Lori) talk the entire three hour flight home? They told these stale-ass jokes AND cracked themselves up, with the wife laughing the loudest! They were CORNY as an Iowa cornfield in July. I heard them when I was asleep with headphones in my ears. After a good time in Los Angeles, I was returning to the cold and snow - which was not exactly what I wanted. So I was listening to Lalah Hathaway to ease my mind. I'm trying to return to MinneSNOWta in a mellow mood. This 'won't shut the hell up' family disturbed my groove. Yes, I did suggest they shut up, but they weren't trying to listen to me. They were like the Stepford Family with just a little bit of Trailer Park tossed in for an added kick. I had to turn the music up louder, so I could sleep. Damn!!!

Welcome Home

It has been several years, but I have returned to the place I considered my second home. I can attest that everything must change. While driving around the city this evening, I've noticed growth within the little community where I spend much of my time. New business popped up in the three years since my last visit. I can't wait to see how things look in the light of day. Yes, L.A. has always felt like home. I'm glad to be here once again. I'm sure I'll have some tales to tell, since I'm spending some time with the "UNRULEY" one. Let me say this, she is a WILD GIRL like her song says. I recall someone saying years ago, "...wild women don't get the blues." "UNRULEY" don't do the blues, y'all.

Looky here, I got something to say... A Message For Christina "Dirrty" Aguilera

I was sitting here, minding my own self-business, and then IT happened. I heard this announcement, "Ladies and Gentlemen, singing our National Anthem, Christina Aguilera." I instinctively knew she was going to mangle the Star Spangled Banner. Oh yeah, I was on point. That chick MURDERED it. Not that she would ever read this blog, but I do have a message for her. "Listen dear, I realize SOMEBODY done told you wrong. I feel the need to make things right. I'm going tell you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but, so help me... You sucked at singing The National Anthem. Check this out - take a moment or two to listen to Whitney, then listen to Marvin perform it. That's all - just listen. Don't ever, ever, NEVER, ever, ever, ever, ever, never, EVER do that song again. Stick with what you know. I still like you and you can feel free to ask me for advice at any time. All my years in the business can be beneficial to you." As I said, SHE won't read it, but maybe, just maybe thru six degrees of separation, someone will tell her what I said. You never know?!?!? I found this version of our National Anthem performed by the late Marvin Gaye, and his daughter Nona. It's good y'all.

Getting dirtty - that's what Christina should stick to doing. Always, always go with what you know and what works best for you. You do you, Boo!

New Year's Eve

December 31, 1988
This was taken at a New Year's Eve/Birthday Party and Wedding Reception for my cousin Pam and her husband, Tim. I remember that NYE was a very cold one. I can't say what the temperature was, but I'm sure it was in the teens or single digits that night. One thing, we MinneSNOWtans are a hearty lot. We will leave our homes in all seasons and weather conditions to attend a self described "must attend" event. This multi-themed party was one of those events. Tyra called me the day before to ensure my suit, shirt and tie would match her outfit. The gentleman escorting her to any social event simply had to coordinate with her dress for that evening, period. I know on more than one occasion I changed MY tie to match what she was wearing. There never was an issue or problem with accommodating her request. She was meticulous with those details and I knew it. It was all good. Hanging with Tyra always meant a fun time. The night this picture was taken is no exception. I look at this picture twenty-two years later with fond memories of that evening.
Happy New Year 2011
May there be much
Peace, Joy, Love,
Excellent Health and Prosperity

A Blast From Christmas Past...

Christmas always made me happy. Like anyone (child or adult), I liked to receive gifts, and give them as well. As a kid, I did my Christmas shopping at Woolworth's, Walgreens, G.C. Murphy's or Grants. My mother, grandmother, sister and aunt would receive, CHARLIE, JEAN NATE, TABU or LOVE'S BABY SOFT perfume. My father, grandfather, brother and uncle would receive BRITISH STERLING, BRUT, OLD SPICE or HAI KARATE after shave. I'm certain I gave my uncle "Snookie" BRUT as a present for Christmas 1975. It played a role in our Christmas thirty-five years later. Toyia told me there was a gift from "Snookie" for me under the tree. When I picked it up and shook it, I jokingly asked, "Is this a bottle of liquor or BRUT?" I had my answer the moment I ripped the wrapping paper. I smiled and laughed when I saw it was BRUT. It took me back to Christmas 1975. I gave him BRUT then, and he gave it to me now. It was a Christmas like so many others. It was one filled with great food, presents, laughter and love. Yesterday we had another one of those Christmases. I got everything I wanted for Christmas; I received some nice gifts, enjoyed a delicious meal and spent time with my family.

A Day In My MinneSNOWTA Life

A snow storm hit the Twin Cities, the likes of which we've not experienced in many years. The airport was shut down, public transportation slowed and taxi cab companies stopped answering their phones. The weather was bad, but I didn't allow it to stop me from leaving home. In the middle of the storm, I ventured out and about. I went to the grocery store and brought along Nephew for the experience and it was memorable. Like so many teenagers today, he wears his pants hanging off his ass or sagging. This would prove to be a problem for him. While we were walking home from the bus stop, his pants began to fall down. We stopped several times on our walk home. Nephew needed to pull up his falling pants every ten feet or so. As we approached the building two teenage girls stepped outside. It was about this time Nephew's pants fell down completely around his ankles. He said, "Thank God I was wearing basketball shorts." I mentioned a belt would have prevented all of that from happening. He agreed. While we were out in the storm and when we were home safe and sound, I thought about the Cooleys living in Iowa in the early part of the 20th Century. How would they have dealt with weather like this? There was no television, cable, radio, cd or dvd player to pass the time. My guess is the family spent the time reading, singing, playing games or simply talking. They endured a Midwest Winter with none of the modern conveniences we have today, We complain about the weather and the horrible condition of the sidewalks, streets and highways. My thought is, if they could make it then, I most certainly can make it now. I have all the things I need right here, with no plans for venturing out this evening or tomorrow. That seems to be the best idea for handling a Winter storm. I think they felt the same way back in 1915. Good ideas are timeless!
